After my purple sunburn on Volan Irazu, I've started applying SPF 50 every morning. So, I don't think I have any more color in my skin than I did a week ago. But I have had my share of hot. If there is one thing I will remember about Samarra (other than blue water and white sand), it's the heat. But as long as I stay by the water, there is a nice breeze to keep me cool.
This week has been a mix of extremes. When class is in, I'm frazzled Karen, but when class is out, I'm I-have-nothing-better-to-do-than-sit-on-the-beach Karen. This has been the hardest week of language class. I have learned present-tense, past tense and (as of yesterday) future tense verbs. I have no idea how to use any of them, so I say things like, "Yesterday, I am going traveling." or "Tomorrow, I ate supper." I wish I could say I am doing it intionally to get some amusement out of the looks that I get, particularly from my Tica Mom.
True to my promise from the last post, I have faithfully attended dance classes every night this week. And I'm getting more and more confident that I can now hold my own on the salsa dance floor. The school is going out to a "club" in Samarra tonight for a few hours of salsa dancing. I say "club" because there really is no such thing in Samarra as far as I can see. Samarra is a town of tiny bars and make-shift surf shops.
Just a few more days left here in Samarra. On Sunday, I go back to San Jose and then leave for Panama on Monday. It will begin the real test of my ability to speak in espanol.
Chao, amigos.
